Student Aasim Khan joined ULaw in 2019 to study the LLB Law with Business at our Leeds campus. We caught up with Aasim to ask for his advice for future university students and discuss his ambition to become a solicitor.

Why wouldn’t you choose to study at ULaw? It’s the best in the UK when it comes to studying law. ULaw is a professional institution based on teaching law in a practical way that no other university has done.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to my career, and life is unpredictable as to where it will take me. However, my aim in life is to become a merging and acquisitions solicitor for a big firm, making big transactions and representing global companies.
It would be hard to name one particular member of staff at ULaw that has helped me. Although, when I was studying at the Manchester campus during my first year, Niall was always there to listen. He was always supportive and gave genuine advice.
I was an Employability Ambassador in my first year. It’s a great skill to prepare ULaw students for the real working world. That is what ULaw is all about, learning but also practicality.
I was the Vice President of the Student Association (SA) for the Manchester campus during my first year and have now been elected as the Vice President for the Leeds campus. It’s an honour to have represented two campuses as I don’t think anyone else has done that. My role involves interaction with students and members of staff, including tutors as well as the senior management team. From my experience, they have all been very helpful and supportive. Being at ULaw is like one big family, everyone pretty much knows everyone and that’s a feeling you don’t get at other universities.
There is so much to learn at ULaw, so much to get involved in. As it’s not an enormous campus and everyone knows each other, you learn a lot about different cultures and can get involved in a lot of things you wouldn’t normally.
If there is one thing I have learnt at ULaw, it is how to be a supportive person. I have been involved in the support side of the system as well as the academic. I have had the feel of being on the professional side of it as well. Having that responsibility of being a campus representative, of always being proficient and not letting yourself or others down.
My advice for ULaw students is, when an opportunity arises, be prepared to take it or there will be many others that will fight for it. ULaw has helped me prepare for such situations because the real professional world won't go easy on any of us.
Second to that, enjoy it. Take advantage of the Support Services and work hard. If you struggle, there will be someone there to help you. Just be yourself. University isn’t a prison for taking in information but an opportunity to discover what you really want from life and where you want life to take you. It’s preparation for the next stage of your life. As much as you want to enjoy it, also prepare for it.
At university, it just takes a ‘hey’ or a ‘hello’ to start a conversation. Nobody is going to bite your head off just because you started a conversation. The library is always a good place to start, as well as the workshops. Eventually, everything falls into place and the more time you spend here, the more friends you will make, the key to that is being approachable. Just be kind to one another, help each other and be supportive. Before you know it, you will have a bunch of friends.
