Sheffield may once have been known as the heart of the British steel industry but the city has evolved to become a vibrant cultural hub with a strong sense of community. Our partnership with the University of Sheffield means our postgraduate ULaw cohort will be able to enjoy everything this incredible city has to offer. To celebrate this partnership, we’re taking a look at the top five reasons to study in Sheffield.

Live music
Sheffield is well known for its love of live music, birthing bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, The Human League, Bring Me the Horizon and Pulp. Great venues like The Leadmill and The Harley will keep you up-to-date with the emerging bands and musicians and don’t miss the annual Tramlines festival. Usually consisting of more than 70 artists across four stages, plus comedy, a pop-up cinema, an incredible food line-up, there’s something there for everyone.
Green spaces
Sheffield is home to some of the most breathtaking green scenes in Britain thanks to over thirteen woodland and garden parks. From large outdoor areas such as the stunning Peak District National Park to the award-winning Winter Gardens glasshouse in the centre of the city, which houses over 2,500 plants from around the world, you’re never far away from natural beauty. Sheffield is rumoured to be the greenest city in England with the highest tree to person ratio, and when you get there, you’ll see why.
Sports
You’ll find the people of Sheffield are divided by one main thing; they support Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United. If you’re going to fit in, you’ll need to pick a team.
As well as strong football links, Sheffield also hosts the annual Snooker World Championship at the Crucible Theatre in the heart of the city.
Sheffield is also home to the English Institute of Sport, providing performance areas for activities including Judo, Combat, Netball, Badminton, as well as an Athletics Arena complete with 200m 6-lane track and throws area where Jessica Ennis-Hill prepared for her Olympic and World Championship wins - plus the exclusive World Snooker Academy.
The friendly people
Sheffield is a notoriously friendly town that has managed to keep a real sense of community. Don’t be surprised by strangers talking to you in the streets and here’s some help with a few local terms:
Ey up, duck = hello

The Millennium Gallery
Once you’ve wandered among the luscious greenery of the Winter Garden, you can nip right next door and visit another one of Sheffield’s highlights. You’ll find permanent exhibitions showcasing some of the world’s finest metals works, including exhibits that Sheffield is famous for.
As well as the permanent exhibitions, the gallery hosts visiting exhibitions from the Tate, V&A and the National Portrait Gallery. As well as visual art, you’ll also find it home to ivories, a natural science collection of over 120,000 biological and 60,000 geological specimens and items of interest from social history and world cultures.
