When lecturer Dr. Shuang Liang decided to enhance her knowledge of English law she left her home of China and studied the GDL at our Leeds Campus, before going on to study the LPC at our Manchester Campus. Shuang continues to represent ULaw as an international ambassador for China. We caught up with her to find out what she’s up to now and how The University of Law has helped her to reach her ambitions.

I chose to study law because I enjoy case reading and wanted to enhance my critical thinking skills. I decided to study at The University of Law because it has a great reputation in the UK. It offers very professional training and a variety of comprehensive law courses. I wanted to study and learn more about the British legal system.
As an international ambassador I’m looking forward to sharing my experience of studying at ULaw with prospective students. As a non-English native speaker I was delighted to win the LPC Stage Two Award for immigration from ULaw, I want to encourage all international students to keep believing in their application and to study with ULaw because they can do it too.
I am currently a lecturer at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law. I also work part-time as a legal advisor for Duan & Duan (Chongqing) law firm and Jingsh (Chongqing) law firm in China. Due to the increasing amount of investment occurring between China and the UK it is creating more opportunities and demand for lawyers that share this knowledge.
Katie Giles, who was my Immigration Lecturer during LPC, was my favourite tutor. She was extremely helpful throughout the course and supported me whilst I applied for my visa.
Thankfully it wasn’t too difficult for me to get a job after my studies. I have a PhD, I passed the LPC course and have internship experience in two big British law firms. Therefore, I’ve had more than 3 offers since I completed the LPC course.
My advice to other students looking to secure their first job is to catch every opportunity that comes your way. Keep studying and work hard, it will all pay off.
The highlight of my career so far is being able to carry out research as a lecturer and practise as a lawyer. I am very proud of my success.
My legal qualifications have provided me with the knowledge and practical skills to pursue law. I always tell my students that knowledge and research without any practical experience is a person without a soul. I am grateful that the qualification makes me a whole person.
